Sexual Arousal Roadblocks: Common Reasons for Being “Turned off”

Sometimes people cannot be sexual aroused no matter how hard they try. This could happen for any number of reasons. Some of the reasons for men are the same as for women, but sometimes they are different.

For Men

One of the major causes of lack of sexual arousal in men is stress. This may sometimes be accompanied by depression which could have occurred from a loss of a previous relationship.

Another major problem men have is that when they age achieving and maintaining an erection becomes harder and harder. This can lead to a variety of insecurities and inadequacies which further compound the problem of impotence.

In addition, illnesses such as diabetes contribute to lack of erection. Certain medications may also cause impotence in men, and cause them to lose their ability to become sexually aroused.

Daily worries such as job loss which leads to financial difficulties may also cause a man to lose interest in sex. Sometimes neglecting to exercise on a regular basis is also a cause.

A man’s sex drive also just sometimes naturally decreases with age, from the time he is in his 20s and beyond. At a certain point in a man’s life he may even experience what is now known as “andropause” in which his testosterone level drastically decreases.

For Women

Women often lose interest in sex for some of the same reasons as a man. It could be because of when she reaches a certain age (although women peak sexually much later than men), or it could be due to excess stress.

Women also do not usually want to have sex when they are depressed, either. This may be because of a tragic event or trauma that has occurred either recently or a long time ago.

Furthermore, although women are oftentimes not the primary source of income in a household she may feel financial stress. This may be a result of her job loss or her spouse’s income loss.

Disability or illness (as for men) is also another reason women may no longer be sexually aroused. Any medications taken also might affect a woman’s desires.

An additional cause for lack of interest in females might also be hormonal changes. This occurs during and after pregnancy as well as during and after menopause.

IMPORTANT: For both Men and Women

Another issue that has been touched on but not addressed directly above is psychological dysfunctions that lead to lack of sexual arousal. As mentioned already, depression or sadness is one cause of sexual disinterest.

Another is of course past traumas. For both men and women a variety of tragic circumstances can lead to impotence or frigidity. One of the worst of these is probably past abuse, especially sexual. If you have ever suffered this problem seek help immediately.
